Mama Medicine is Deborah Hanekamp - “fashion’s favorite healer” (Vogue Magazine). Mama Medicine facilitates Medicine Readings out of her Space in Soho, NYC. These ceremonies integrate over 17 years of experience and wisdom in the healing arts. Her work blends ancient knowledge from across a variety of traditions. What I do:

Leading monthly Sharing Circles, the man behind the curtain for all your Client Services and Medicine Reading related questions, asking my own questions on monthly Ask Mamas!

Why do you do it:

I’m an artist and storyteller to my core. I believe in community and that we all share the need to be seen and heard. In compassionate listening and presence, we learn to see and hear each other and by sharing our authentic truths we receive it in return.

How the offering started:

Spirituality and Creativity have both been major parts of my life, and I now see how deeply connected they are. It’s all communion, with self, with others, Spirit, and nature. And Deborah is great about seeing your strengths and giving gentle nudges toward letting them shine...Sharing Circles felt like the perfect first offering.

Random fact or hobby:

I started as a dancer and in high school was the youngest dancer for an NBA team. (I literally never tell people that!)

How I create space:

Painting, reading, real conversations with friends. Bare feet, and smelling the sea.

What I do:

At Space, I offer sound baths as a unique experience and as a tool for heart opening. In addition, I manage the social media for @spacebymamamedicine bringing you all things happening at Space to life.

Why do you do it:

I create a sound experience because sound moves me - the powerful energy shifts which can be made through a Crystal Tones singing bowl has profoundly connected me to this work. It is an honor to facilitate an offering through these tools.

How the offering started:

The offering started for me organically. It was a strong pull for me to work the alchemy bowls, there was no question in my mind when I met my set. Sound baths are offered twice per month, on the waxing and waning moons.

Random fact or hobby:

My family has a small farm in my hometown, my favorite place to be! I love being the first one up to feed and water the animals, collect the eggs and enjoy the mornings to fullest.

How I create space:

I create space by listening to my intuition and through travel. My heart is nomadic. The constant state of change allows me to be moved by my own compassion and trust in my intuition to guide me and to create space within.

What I do:

I hold the space for our sharing circles, and create the editorial content for Mama Medicine (Monthly and Weekly Medicine newsletters - sign up!).

Why you do it:

I love the accessibility of the sharing circles - we all know how to talk and listen. The simple bravery of showing up and being vulnerable in front of strangers is sneaky powerful. It moves me every time! The editorial content is a great way for me to continue spreading the message of the brand - "you are your own healer" - by showcasing simple healing actions and rituals we can do on our own, for free, in our everyday lives.

How the offering started:

I spent 18 months working with Deborah as a brand consultant, while simultaneously healing myself through Deborah's Medicine Readings and my own growing spiritual practice. I transitioned into my current role once the brand was successfully launched and my self care cup had filled and wanted to pour outwards! Sharing circles are held twice a month on Wednesdays, led by either me or Allison. Our monthly newsletter goes out the first of the month and our weeklies go out on Mondays.

Random fact or hobby:

My mom is Finnish, my dad is from Kentucky, I grew up in the West Village, and I've spent a chunk of my teens and twenties living in Europe (Scotland, France, Spain). I'm a cultural mashup! Also, I'm really good at tongue twisters.

How I create space:

Whether its through meditation, hanging out with my family, or reading a fantasy novel - I actively temper my NYC hustle fire to keep myself in balance. I walk bare feet on the earth whenever I can.

What I do:

I manage the behind the scenes action at Space including Press, Events, Brand Partnerships, Retreats, and all the operational nitty gritty.

Why do you do it:

I do this work because I am a mover and shaker who also always dreamed of 'doing good.' It brings me great joy to see the healing and love that results from the many hours of work that goes into Space and her expansion. I feel so thankful to have found a role that nurtures me on so many levels.

A random fact or hobby:

I live in Los Angeles now (but I grew up in Chelsea and still don’t know how to drive!) which is why I am a bit of a mystery lady.

How I create space:

I create Space by honoring my daily routines so I too can grow in this work.
